The ornamental detail in Straits shophouses wasn’t reserved for display pieces. It lived on shelf edges, cupboard cornices, the grout lines between imported floor tiles — decoration embedded in the functional, noticed only by those who looked closely.
Laut Berkilau translates that domestic vocabulary into a brooch. At its centre, an untreated light blue sapphire — cushion cut, soft yet structured, the colour of shallow coastal water on a clear morning. Around it, white and yellow gold branches outward in botanical lattice: florets, curling leaves, scattered stars. The forms echo the rhythmic tessellations of early Peranakan tilework and the carved cornices that framed everyday storage into something more considered.
The border became the centrepiece. The edging became the point.
